
DeWitt first appeared on stage when she was 13. When she was 13, Dewitt began appearing on stage. She earned the Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. The director advised her to pursue UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. There she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship, as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she was employed as a secretary up to her TV debut in an episode of Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has declared that the two actors did not meet. DeWitt is most well-known for her role in the series Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 as Janet Wood. This was the first job she had after she was cast in the second pilot. She also portrayed Janet in a 1979 episode of the spinoff show The Ropers. Following the show's conclusion, Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in the year 1984 following which she resigned from acting for several years. Her acting resume included the role in an episode of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. Then, she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured the character who was modeled on her voice by a different actress in 1997. The actress was also featured in an episode Cybill. A few of her TV shows of the 2000s include Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as in addition to Call of the Wild.
